Hair Transplant

A Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is a surgical procedure used to treat hair loss. Unlike the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method, which involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area, FUE involves harvesting individual hair follicles directly from the donor site.

Here's how the FUE procedure typically works:

  1. Donor Area Identification: The surgeon identifies the donor area, usually the back or sides of the scalp, where hair follicles are genetically resistant to balding.
  2. Hair Follicle Extraction: Using a small, specialized tool called a micro-punch or a micro-needle, the surgeon extracts individual follicular units from the donor area. Each follicular unit contains one to four hairs along with supportive tissues.
  3. Recipient Site Preparation: The recipient site, where the hair will be transplanted, is prepared by making tiny incisions or punctures in the scalp.
  4. Hair Transplantation: The extracted follicular units are carefully implanted into the recipient sites one by one. The surgeon places them at the appropriate angle and density to achieve a natural-looking result.
  5. Post-Procedure Care: After the transplantation is complete, the patient is provided with instructions for post-operative care, including how to care for the transplanted area and manage any discomfort.

FUE has several advantages over FUT, including:

  • Minimal scarring: Since individual follicles are extracted, there's no linear scar like in FUT.
  • Faster recovery: The healing process is typically quicker, and there's less discomfort compared to FUT.
  • Less invasive: FUE does not involve the removal of a strip of skin, making it less invasive.

However, FUE may not be suitable for all patients, especially those with extensive hair loss or specific hair characteristics. It's essential to consult with a qualified hair transplant surgeon to determine the most suitable technique based on individual needs and expectations.

Am I a Suitable Candidate?

Please answer the following questions below and pass the answers on to your coordinator.

  1. What is your age?
  2. Do you have any illnesses or allergies?
  3. Are you taking any medications?
  4. Have you had any other previous procedures done?
  5. Whether you smoke?

Could you also send us a photo of your hair from front, back, both sides and top for your surgeon’s assessment?

Is Hair Transplant Procedure Safe?

While Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is generally considered safe when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon, like any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks and potential complications. Some of the risks associated with FUE hair transplantation include:

  1. Scarring: Although FUE is often touted for its minimal scarring compared to the strip method (Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT), tiny scars or white dots may still develop at the donor site where individual follicles are harvested. These scars are usually small and less noticeable than the linear scar associated with FUT, but they can still be visible under certain circumstances.
  2. Risk of Overharvesting: Extracting too many follicles from the donor area can lead to thinning or depletion of hair in that area, which may compromise future transplant options or the overall appearance of the donor area.
  3. Shock Loss: Some existing hair in the recipient area or near the transplant site may fall out temporarily due to trauma during the procedure. This is a normal and temporary phenomenon, and the hair typically regrows within a few months.
  4. Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there's a risk of infection at the donor or recipient sites. Proper sterilization techniques and post-operative care can help minimize this risk.
  5. Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal during and after the procedure, but excessive bleeding can occur in rare cases. Surgeons take precautions to control bleeding during the surgery.
  6. Numbness or Sensation Changes: Temporary numbness or altered sensation in the donor or recipient area may occur following the procedure. This usually resolves on its own over time, but in rare cases, it may persist.
  7. Uneven Hair Growth: In some cases, the transplanted hair may not grow uniformly, resulting in an uneven or patchy appearance. This can sometimes be corrected with additional procedures or adjustments.
  8. Cysts: Occasionally, small cysts may develop at the site of transplanted hair follicles. These are usually harmless and can be treated if necessary.

It's essential for patients to discuss these risks with their surgeon before undergoing FUE or any other hair transplant procedure. Choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon and following post-operative instructions carefully can help minimize the likelihood of complications and achieve the best possible results.

How Long Does The Recovery Take?

In the immediate post-operative period following a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant, patients may experience mild discomfort, soreness, and swelling around the donor and recipient areas. It's essential to take it easy during this time and follow post-operative care instructions provided by the surgeon. Within the first week, scabs may form around the transplanted follicles, which will gradually fall off. Patients should avoid strenuous activities and carefully cleanse the scalp as directed to promote proper healing.

Over the following months, patients can expect the transplanted hair to shed within the first few weeks, followed by new hair growth starting around three to four months post-procedure. Initially, the hair may be fine and thin, but it will gradually thicken over time. By six months, many patients will notice significant improvement in hair density and appearance. However, it can take up to a year or more to see the full results of the transplant as the transplanted hair continues to mature and thicken. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are essential to monitor progress and address any concerns throughout the recovery process.
